Plettenberg Bay is visited by most of the ocean mammals found in the Southern African waters. A boat trip around the bay brings one closer to these diverse species of whales and dolphins. Even if you spot no whales, there are plenty of interesting things to see and the knowledgable skipper and tour guide makes the ocean and area come alive!
The ecological adventure begins at Central Beach with an exciting beach launch and heads east past the bird sanctuary and Keurbooms beach to Arch Rock. Here one usually encounters Bottlenose and the rare Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins as well as some shark species. From Arch Rock the boat heads out to sea for about 7km where pelagic seabirds can be found and our resident Bryde's whales may be spotted, as well as Common Dolphins or Southern Right and Humpback whales during their season between June and November.

The boat then traverses the Bay to Robberg Peninsula and out to the Wild side, often encountering groups of whales and pods of dolphins.
Cruising back along the inside of Robberg, one can see the unique geology of the peninsular and can observe the growing Cape Fur Seal colony.
On the way back along Robberg beach, a brief history of the area is given including the story of the Beacon Island Hotel, which is built on the site of the original Whaling Station. The trip ends with an exhilarating landing, again on Central Beach.
- The boat operation is a licensed SABBWWA permit holder, which enables them to approach whales from 50 meters instead of 300 meters.
- Should the whales approach the vessel it does not have to move away. The guests therefore get an up close experience with these majestic mammals.
- All tours and encounters with marine mammals are conducted strictly according to current regulations and conservation guidelines.
