Paarl (Dutch for pearl), is the third oldest settlement in South Africa and takes its name from the huge granite outcrop that is the Paarl Mountain. The Drakenstein valley is not only breathtaking but rich in history and heritage.

The town's architecture is a testament to the diverse history of this town with Dutch, Edwardian, Victorian and Georgian buildings. It is also the site of the Drakenstein Prison, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for the last few years.
